Prisons in Rural OK
Oklahoma has the highest incarceration rate in the world with a rate of 1,079 per 100,000 people. There are 27 prisons in Oklahoma with the vast majority located in rural communities. These prisons significantly impact the population and economies of these rural towns. The alarming rate of incarceration in Oklahoma has lead local legislators to question prison reform.
While the legal system works toward reformation, organizations such as Poetic Justice work with inmates to provide them with an immediate outlet for expression. Through art and written word, Poetic Justice helps inmates form healthy coping habits that ease the transition back into society.
